On 30th May, 1916, 8th Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 72 Brigade, 24th Division, took over the front line trenches near Wulverghem, south of Ypres. Between 1.30pm and 2.45pm the following day, 31st May, the enemy targeted these positions with their heavy trench mortars and artillery. Most of these fell behind the front line causing considerable damage to the main communication trench, Northumberland Avenue, but one fell on Trench D1 and a heavy shell also hit Trench C3. The six casualties sustained by 8th Queens as a result included William Willey, who was killed.
